Describing what you wear in Spanish: Spanish Lesson 25

Describing what you wear in Spanish

This is the twenty-fifth lesson in our beginner level Spanish course and we will look at Describing what you wear in Spanish.

We will learn useful new vocabulary related to clothing and practice using it with the regular verb Llevar (To wear). Before we start practising Describing what you wear in Spanish we recommend that you review Lesson 20: Present Tense with Regular Verbs and Lesson 21: More Regular Verbs in Present Tense.

First, let’s learn some new vocabulary of Clothing in Spanish:

La ropa (Clothing):

describing what you wear in Spanish clothes

El jersey/El suéter: jumper, sweater
La chaqueta: jacket
El abrigo: coat
Los pantalones: pants, trousers

Los pantalones cortos: shorts
La falda: skirt
El vestido: dress
Los zapatos: shoes
Las deportivas: sneakers, trainers
Las botas: boots
Los calcetines: socks

El traje: suit
La corbata: tie
Los calzoncillos: underpants
Las bragas: knickers
El sujetador: bra
Ropa informal: casual clothing
Ropa formal: formal clothing

As we mentioned in the previous lesson about Fruits and Vegetables in Spanish, please don’t try to memorise lots of new vocabulary in one go. Aim to learn five or six new words a day and try to be consistent with your studies. And don’t forget to carry a dictionary or dictionary app with you at all times to look up words you can’t remember or haven’t learned yet.

Next, let’s practice using this new Clothing vocabulary with the regular verb Llevar (To wear):

Here are the conjugation rules again for regular verbs in Present Tense:

Yo

Él/Ella
Nosotros/as
Vosotros/as
Ellos/Ellas
-o
-as/-es
-a/-e
-amos/-emos/-imos
-áis/-éis/-ís
-an/-en

Practice dialogue

¿Qué ropa llevas al trabajo?: What clothes do you wear to work?
Llevo un traje todos los días: I wear a suit every day
¿Llevas una corbata?: Do you wear a tie?
Sí, en la oficina todos llevamos una corbata: Yes, in the office we all wear a tie.

¿Qué ropa llevas cuando no trabajas?: What clothes do you wear when you don’t work?
Siempre llevo vaqueros, deportivas y camiseta: I always wear jeans, trainers and t-shirt
Siempre llevo ropa muy informal cuando no trabajo: I always wear casual clothes when I don’t work

¿Y tu hermana? ¿Ella lleva ropa informal también?: And your sister? Does she wear casual clothes also?
Mi hermana es estudiante. No trabaja, solo estudia. Pero ella siempre lleva ropa muy formal: My sister is a student. She doesn’t work, she only studies. But she always wears very formal clothes.
¿Qué lleva?: What does she wear?
Lleva un vestido o una blusa y una falda: She wears a dress or a blouse and a skirt

Observe that the ending of the verb Llevar (To wear) is changed depending on the person doing the action.

For example, if the sentence is “I wear” then the verb Llevar will be changed to Llevo and if the sentence is “We wear” then the verb Llevar will be changed to Llevamos.

Keep practising by creating your own sentences using as many regular Spanish verbs as you can remember with Present Tense. You might also want to revisit Lesson 17 in this course which looked at The Colours in Spanish and practice using these with clothing.
